Fuel price increases impact shipping and logistics in Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea
Rising fuel costs are impacting logistics and consumer pricing across the Pacific region. In the Solomon Islands, increased fuel prices are driving up vessel operating costs, maintenance, and freight movements. Kitchener Wheatley of the Solomon Islands Maritime Transport Association noted that these costs may flow through the supply chain, potentially raising the price of basic goods in remote provinces. To mitigate this, Wheatley has called for targeted tax relief for domestic shipping operators and increased investment in fuel infrastructure and efficient vessel technologies.
In Port Moresby, the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) reported that while fuel prices have increased, they remain lower than international market rates due to ongoing government subsidies. The price hike is attributed to the gradual reduction of a K1 billion fuel stabilization package. Despite the reduction in direct support, consumers continue to benefit from GST exemptions on fuel, which are scheduled to remain in place until December 31, 2026.
Logistics companies are also adjusting to the volatility. In the Solomon Islands, the delivery firm CabIt has implemented new pricing structures for both scooter and vehicle deliveries to account for rising fuel expenses.
