Germany fuel prices approach historic highs amid regional tensions

Fuel prices in Germany are approaching historic highs, with Super E10 gasoline averaging 2.165 euros per liter, nearly reaching the March 2022 record of 2.203 euros. Diesel prices have also risen, averaging 2.260 euros per liter. The ADAC warns that 2026 could become the most expensive year for refueling on record.

Several factors are driving these increases. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, specifically the conflict involving Iran, have pushed global crude oil prices higher. Additionally, low water levels on the Rhine have increased inland transport costs. The expiration of previous German tax discounts has also contributed to the upward trend.

In response to rising costs, Poland has implemented a fuel price relief package, including a reduced VAT rate of 8 percent and daily maximum retail prices for gasoline and diesel through August 31. Meanwhile, in Germany, political debates continue regarding potential relief measures, such as windfall profit taxes for mineral oil companies.
