Fuel prices drive political debate and theft across Europe
Rising fuel prices in Europe are driving political debate and criminal activity. In Finland, politicians and figures like Harry Harkimo are calling for lower prices, suggesting a reduction in the distribution obligation—the requirement to mix renewable fuels into gasoline and diesel. Harkimo criticized fuel companies like Neste for significant profit increases during this period, suggesting they should be taxed to benefit consumers. However, climate experts warn that lowering these mandates could increase Finland's traffic emissions by one million tons annually.
Simultaneously, high costs are fueling a rise in fuel theft across Europe. While diesel thefts decreased in Sweden between 2022 and 2025 due to improved police methods, authorities warn that rising prices may reverse this trend. Similar increases in fuel siphoning have been reported in Ireland and France, affecting private individuals, farmers, and transport companies.
