Energy markets face volatility as LPG prices rise and supply threats emerge
In Bangladesh, the government has warned liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) operators against creating artificial shortages or conducting strikes to demand higher prices. Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood stated that legal action under the Essential Commodities Act, 1956, will be taken if operators disrupt the supply. The government is working with the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) to maintain stable supplies and affordable prices despite global energy market fluctuations.
In Ghana, the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) projects a reduction in petrol and diesel prices starting October 16, 2026, due to favorable international market movements. However, LPG prices are expected to rise by approximately 18.5 per cent. Benjamin Nsiah, Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), has urged the government to suspend taxes or levies on LPG to protect consumers from this hike, noting that rising costs could drive households back to traditional fuels like firewood.
