Switzerland faces challenges in EV adoption and high fuel costs
Economic and automotive trends in Switzerland and neighboring regions show significant shifts in consumer behavior. Amag CEO Helmut Ruhl reports that Switzerland is falling behind in Europe regarding electric vehicle adoption, dropping from 5th place in 2019 to 16th by late 2025. He cites contradictory framework conditions, such as lack of charging infrastructure for renters and inconsistent cantonal motor vehicle taxes, as primary obstacles.
Fuel price disparities are driving Swiss motorists to cross borders. A survey of 6,000 participants indicates that 38% already refuel in countries like Austria and France to avoid high Swiss diesel prices. While many find the detour impractical, others take advantage of lower costs in Germany and Austria, where tax relief is anticipated.
For travelers entering Austria, the digital 1-day highway vignette is available for immediate use upon online purchase. In 2026, the cost is set at 9.60 Euro for cars and 3.80 Euro for motorcycles. Additionally, consumer advice suggests that in Switzerland, refueling in the evening between 18:00 and 20:00 or avoiding weekends can offer minor savings.
