Fuel prices fluctuate across Europe amid rising costs and subsidies

Fuel prices across Europe and the Balkans are experiencing significant volatility. In Montenegro, fuel prices for personal transport rose by approximately 30.4 percent year-on-year in August. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, diesel prices are approaching the 4 KM per liter mark, which is increasing costs for transport and food production. In North Macedonia, diesel remains relatively affordable at approximately 1.70 euros per liter due to government tax reductions, though the expiration of these measures remains a concern.

In Bratislava, the Bratislava Transport Company (DPB) reported an 11 percent increase in diesel costs between January and August, totaling roughly one million euros. However, officials stated that this increase will not automatically result in higher passenger fares, noting that nearly half of their fleet uses electric or hydrogen traction.

In contrast, Malta continues to use state subsidies to keep diesel prices at 1.21 euros per liter, a policy that has cost the government approximately 75 million euros by the end of August. Meanwhile, in Slovenia, diesel prices are expected to potentially drop below 2 euros per liter following government decisions regarding tax exemptions.
