Fuel prices surge across Central Europe amid rising oil costs
Fuel prices across Central Europe, particularly in the Czech Republic and Poland, are experiencing significant upward pressure. In the Czech Republic, gasoline (Natural 95) and diesel prices rose by approximately 1.90 CZK per liter over a single week, reaching averages of 44.22 CZK and 47.79 CZK respectively. Gasoline prices have reached their highest levels since August 2022.
This surge is primarily attributed to rising global crude oil prices, with Brent crude exceeding 100 USD per barrel, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and uncertainty regarding oil transport through the Strait of Hormuz.
In Poland, fuel costs are also rising following the end of certain tax relief programs, with diesel prices approaching 9 PLN per liter. While the Polish energy ministry suggests a massive spike to 10 PLN is unlikely in the immediate future, experts warn of continued volatility due to global refining issues and regional conflicts.
In response to the Czech price hikes, Industry Minister Karel Havlíček stated that the government is monitoring the situation and will intervene if domestic prices become significantly higher than those in neighboring countries. Meanwhile, in Austria, gasoline prices in Vienna have also hit new record medians.
