Iran fuel tanker explosion kills at least 10 people

A fuel tanker explosion on the Hamedan-Sanandaj highway in western Iran has resulted in at least 10 to 11 deaths and between six and seven injuries. The incident occurred on a major road linking Kurdistan and Hamadan provinces.

According to the governor of Sanandaj and Iranian state media, the explosion was triggered by a traffic collision caused by a suspected technical failure in the tanker's braking system. The blast ignited several nearby vehicles, causing a massive fire that emergency responders eventually brought under control.

The accident highlights ongoing road safety concerns in Iran. Reports indicate that the country faces high rates of traffic fatalities due to aging vehicle fleets, poor road conditions, and inconsistent traffic enforcement. This event follows a similar fatal collision involving a tanker and a bus near Sanandaj in 2018.
