To avoid running out of fuel due to inaccurate range estimates caused by traffic, weather, or driving style, the American Automobile Association (AAA) recommends refueling when the tank reaches approximately one-quarter capacity. Relying solely on the vehicle's computer can be risky, as real-time consumption can change rapidly.

Additionally, drivers are advised to avoid refueling while a tanker truck is actively discharging fuel into the station's underground storage tanks. The process of filling large tanks can stir up accumulated sediment, sludge, and impurities at the bottom. If a vehicle refuels during this period, these contaminants may be drawn into the car's fuel system, potentially damaging injectors and causing engine performance issues.
