FUEN adopts resolution for Macedonian minority rights in Albania

The Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) has unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by the Macedonian Society ‘Ilinden-Tirana’ during a congress in Helsinki. The resolution outlines four primary demands aimed at protecting the rights of the Macedonian minority in Albania.

Key demands include the official renaming of the Pustec Municipality to Prespa Municipality and ensuring that Pustec remains a distinct local government unit during any future administrative-territorial reforms in Albania. Additionally, the resolution calls on Albania to sign and ratify the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.

The document also seeks concrete measures to protect Macedonian identity from denial and assimilation. Nikola Gjurgjaj, president of the Macedonian Society ‘Ilinden-Tirana’, described the adoption as a significant step for preserving the language, culture, and rights of Macedonians in Albania. The resolution will be submitted to Albanian state authorities and relevant international human rights institutions.
