Fuente del Arco commemorates 90th anniversary of Civil War exodus

The III March of the 8,000 was held in Fuente del Arco to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the September 1936 exodus. During the Spanish Civil War, approximately 8,000 people from Extremadura fled on foot to escape advancing rebel troops.

Álvaro Sánchez Cotrina, the general secretary of the PSOE in Extremadura, participated in the march. He expressed a commitment to restoring the Extremadura Democratic Memory Law, criticizing the current Law of Concordance promoted by the PP and Vox, which repealed previous regional legislation on historical memory. Cotrina emphasized the obligation to remember the event to prevent it from being forgotten, calling for acts of dignity and reparation.

The march also honored those intercepted near Reina and Fuente del Arco. Organizers noted that nearly 2,000 people were captured during the flight, many of whom were later executed in Llerena.
