Fuentes de León caves discovery reveals new subterranean connection

A team of speleologists and archaeologists has discovered a new underground chamber that physically connects the Cueva de los Postes and the Cueva Nueva within the Fuentes de León karst system in Badajoz, Extremadura.

During exploration work conducted in 2026, researchers located a previously unknown chamber that allows for the traversal of approximately 100 meters of unexplored galleries. This finding confirms that the two caves, previously thought to be independent, are part of a much more complex subterranean network formed over thousands of years by water circulation through rock.

The discovery provides new data regarding the extension and configuration of the karst system. This information will assist in creating more precise maps, facilitating future research, and helping to establish improved conservation measures for the Natural Monument.
