Fuerteventura authorizes majorero mussel harvesting after 22-year ban
The Government of the Canary Islands has authorized the collection of the majorero mussel (Perna perna) in Fuerteventura until November 30, 2026. This decision follows a 22-year ban implemented in 2004 to protect the species from intense extractive pressure and allow populations to recover.
The authorization, requested by the Gran Tarajal Fishermen's Guild, includes specific conditions and limits for both professional and recreational harvesting to ensure continued conservation. This measure does not represent a permanent lifting of the ban.
To guide future management, the regional Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food has commissioned a scientific study by the public company TRAGSATEC. The study aims to evaluate current population levels and recovery capacity, with results expected by summer 2027. This will update the last scientific assessment conducted in 2014.
