Fuerteventura removes 6,934 invasive plants to protect ecosystems

The Cabildo de Fuerteventura has concluded a year-long environmental operation to combat invasive flora, specifically targeting Calotropis procera. Through its GESPLAN department, the initiative resulted in the removal of 6,934 Calotropis plants to prevent the displacement of native vegetation and the alteration of Canarian habitats.

The campaign focused on high-risk areas including roadsides, agricultural lands, and ravines, with priority given to Pozo Negro before expanding to Antigua, Tuineje, and Pájara. Beyond removal, the project included detection, cleaning, monitoring, and the restoration of affected spaces. The operation also addressed other invasive species such as reeds and canes.
