Peru's Chamber of Deputies grants limited legislative powers to Fujimori government

The Peruvian Chamber of Deputies has approved a request from President Keiko Fujimori's government to grant legislative powers for a period of 90 days. This delegation is limited to two specific areas: citizen security and measures to address the El Niño phenomenon.

In response to the security situation, President Fujimori announced the creation of a unified command that will integrate the National Police of Peru and the Armed Forces to combat crime. This initiative is described by the administration as a total offensive against delinquency.

The decision has sparked political tension. While the Chamber of Deputies approved the partial request, the government has expressed dissatisfaction with the limitations and is seeking further authority through the Senate. Opposition members and the Juntos por el Perú party have criticized the move, with some calling for the rejection of these powers to prevent an expansion of executive control.
