France arrests fugitive wanted for 2021 Madrid hit-and-run

Spanish authorities have arrested a man in France who is suspected of being the driver in a 2021 hit-and-run that killed a 20-year-old medical student in Madrid. The arrest took place on September 28.

The investigation relied on DNA evidence found in the vehicle involved in the accident. The Madrid Municipal Police recovered a sample that, when analyzed by the General Commissariat of Scientific Police, matched a person living in France under a different identity. Investigators subsequently used fingerprints to confirm the individual's true identity.

The victim, a student from Gran Canaria, was struck by a car in the Moncloa district after exiting a VTC vehicle in November 2021. The driver fled the scene, and the victim died from her injuries. The suspect, who was wanted for several crimes including homicide, had been living abroad to evade capture. The arrest was made possible through cooperation between the Spanish Fugitive Location Section, the Spanish Prosecutor's Office, and French authorities.
