India semiconductor sector sees major investments from Applied Materials and Tata Electronics

At the SEMICON India 2026 conference in New Delhi, several major announcements underscored India’s growing role in the global semiconductor ecosystem. Applied Materials pledged a $5 billion investment over the next decade to expand its research and development, supply chain, and workforce capabilities in India, including the establishment of a 140-acre R&D park.

Tata Electronics announced the signing of 16 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with international partners to build a comprehensive manufacturing network. Key partnerships include a collaboration with Nexperia for chip manufacturing, packaging, and testing, and an agreement with Fujifilm to develop a localized semiconductor materials supply chain. Fujifilm plans to invest approximately Rs 800 crore to establish a materials plant in the Dholera Special Investment Region to support Tata’s upcoming 300mm wafer fab.

Tata Electronics is currently advancing two major projects: a semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat, and a packaging and testing facility in Jagiroad, Assam. These initiatives are supported by the Indian government’s Semicon 2.0 program, which has attracted commitments totaling $11 billion to $12 billion. Additionally, Teradyne has opened a new office in Bengaluru to provide technical support and training for the expanding domestic chipmaking sector.
