Fujitsu and Yaqumo begin testing quantum architectures on neutral-atom hardware

Fujitsu Limited and Yaqumo Inc. have commenced hardware verification of quantum computing architectures and software using neutral-atom quantum computers. The collaboration aims to accelerate the practical application of quantum computing by testing Fujitsu’s “STAR architecture” and its open-source “Open Quantum Toolchain for OPerators and Users” on Yaqumo’s developing neutral-atom hardware.

Neutral-atom quantum computers offer advantages such as all-to-all connectivity between qubits, which differs from the connectivity constraints found in superconducting models. This characteristic may allow for more efficient quantum error correction and expanded computational methods. Fujitsu intends to use this research to evaluate how its architecture can reduce the number of qubits required for practical calculations.

Additionally, the partnership seeks to integrate Fujitsu’s open-source software with Yaqumo’s control systems. This would enable users to operate different types of quantum computers through a unified interface via cloud services. Yaqumo, a startup specializing in ytterbium neutral-atom hardware, aims to develop machines with over several hundred qubits and error correction capabilities by fiscal year 2027.
