Fukuoka Airport launches Level 4 autonomous cargo towing

Japan Airlines (JAL) and Fukuoka International Airport Co., Ltd. (FIAC) have commenced Level 4 autonomous operations for towing tractors at Fukuoka Airport as of October 26, 2026. This marks the first use of such technology in western Japan and the third airport in JAL’s network to adopt Level 4 automation, following Haneda and Narita.

The autonomous tractors, manufactured by TLD Robotics, will operate on a 1.7km route connecting the Domestic Cargo Terminal and a ground support equipment holding area. The vehicles, specifically the EZTow model, possess a maximum towing capacity of 14 tonnes.

This initiative is part of the “Airport Business DX” program led by the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau to address severe labor shortages in the ground handling industry and reduce human error. The deployment aims to establish a sustainable operational model for regional hub airports while potentially reducing operational emissions through the use of electric vehicles.
