Fukuoka broadcasters launch drunk driving prevention campaigns

Broadcasters in Fukuoka, including RKB Mainichi Broadcasting and FBS Fukuoka Broadcasting, are launching intensive media campaigns to combat drunk driving, marking the 20th anniversary of a fatal accident at Uminonakamichi Bridge.

The 2006 accident, which resulted in the deaths of three children when a vehicle driven under the influence struck a family car and plunged into Hakata Bay, serves as the focal point for these efforts. FBS is conducting a special campaign from August 17 to August 30, featuring documentary programming such as ‘NNN Document ’26’, which highlights the long-term impact on victims' families.

Journalists involved in the coverage emphasize the responsibility of the media to move beyond reporting daily statistics and instead convey the lasting human consequences of such crimes. The campaigns aim to reach younger generations and parents, focusing on both the emotional toll on families and the necessity of preventative measures like alcohol interlocks and stricter legal penalties.
