Fukuoka City implements alcohol interlocks in official vehicles
Fukuoka City has announced the implementation of alcohol interlock devices in 10 of its official vehicles to combat drunk driving. The devices, manufactured by Tokai Denshi Co., Ltd., prevent an engine from starting if alcohol is detected during a breathalyzer test. The city plans to use these vehicles for routine operations, displaying awareness stickers to educate the public on the technology.
This initiative coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Uminonakamichi Bridge drunk driving accident. To mark the occasion, the city is conducting various awareness campaigns, including lectures by accident survivors, police training exercises, and public events. The goal is to shift the focus from mere awareness to a systemic prevention method that makes it physically impossible to operate a vehicle while intoxicated.
