Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly Speaker Isao Kurauchi avoids resignation vote
A planned vote on a resignation recommendation for Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly Speaker Isao Kurauchi was canceled during an extraordinary session on August 17. The cancellation occurred after Taisuke Hayashi, a Liberal Democratic Party member and former secretary to Kurauchi, introduced an emergency motion to halt the proceedings. Hayashi argued that a vote at this stage would be premature and could negatively impact ongoing investigations by third-party committees.
The motion to cancel the vote was passed by a majority. The controversy stems from allegations of monetary misconduct involving assembly leadership, including claims of extortion-like demands and improper overseas inspections. While the Komeito party confirmed all 10 of its members intended to vote in favor of the resignation, the LDP was unable to reach a unified stance.
Speaker Kurauchi has indicated he may resign once assembly reforms or third-party investigations are concluded. Meanwhile, political leaders, including Yuichiro Tamaki of the Democratic Party for the People, noted that these 'politics and money' issues could become significant focal points in upcoming local elections.
