Takashima, who has served four terms over 16 years, shared his decision via social media and a blog, stating that while he still has many goals for the city, he wishes to pass the baton to the next generation.

In a subsequent appearance on the business media platform ReHac9, Takashima elaborated on his decision, describing it as a conscious choice to avoid the pitfalls of long-term incumbency. He noted the difficulty in distinguishing between a desire to serve the city and a personal attachment to power, expressing a fear of becoming too entrenched in the position.

His tenure has seen significant growth in Fukuoka, including a population increase of 200,000 and a 1.6-fold increase in tax revenue. His departure opens the door for new leadership as the city navigates discussions regarding its status as a sub-capital.
