Fukuoka mayoral election sees record 13 candidates amid disinformation concerns

The upcoming Fukuoka mayoral election has reached a record level of competition, with 13 candidates now officially declaring their intention to run. Among the latest to join the race is Shuji Inatomi, a 56-year-old former member of the House of Representatives, who announced his candidacy as an independent. Inatomi stated his goal is to unlock the city's potential and address various challenges over the next decade.

Incumbent Mayor Soichiro Takashima has expressed a positive view of the high number of candidates, noting it allows voters to find representatives who closely align with their views. However, Takashima clarified that he does not intend to endorse or campaign for any specific candidate at this time.

Amidst the crowded field, concerns are rising regarding the spread of disinformation and slander on social media. Candidate Ayano Sasaki has issued a statement addressing false claims made about her background. Specifically, she reported being targeted with baseless accusations of being a ‘Chinese spy’ due to her history of studying at Tsinghua University in Beijing, despite having completed her studies online from Fukuoka during the pandemic.
