Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly Speaker to resign amid controversy
Chaos has erupted in the Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly following the cancellation of a motion to recommend the resignation of Assembly Speaker Isao Kurauchi. The vote was halted by an emergency motion proposed by Taisuke Hayashi, a prefectural assembly member and former secretary to Kurauchi.
Hayashi defended his decision by stating that the contents of the resignation recommendation were vague and that a proper investigation should precede any vote to avoid leaving a stain on the assembly. However, the move has drawn intense public criticism. Hayashi has temporarily suspended his official website and closed his office due to a continuous influx of complaints from constituents.
Separately, Kurauchi has expressed his intention to resign. The controversy stems from allegations regarding expensive overseas inspections, which have led to criminal complaints of breach of trust. Lawyer Kentaro Motomura commented that given the ongoing police investigation into these matters, Kurauchi should resign immediately regardless of the outcome of any third-party committee investigations.
