Fukuoka court orders 157 million yen compensation for high‑school sports injury

The Fukuoka District Court’s Kokura branch ruled that the prefecture must pay approximately ¥157 million in damages to a former student and his parents. The injury occurred during a physical‑education class at Kitakyushu High School, where the student suffered paralysis of both arms and legs. The court found that the teacher and the school had failed to fulfill their duty of care, leading to the severe injury.

The judgment, delivered on 9 July 2026, closely follows the plaintiffs’ claim and obligates the prefectural government to cover the compensation amount.
