Fukushima Daiichi begins 23rd treated water release

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant has commenced its 23rd release of treated water. Scheduled to run for 19 days through September 18, the operation aims to discharge approximately 7,800 tons of treated water diluted with seawater. The total tritium content for this period is estimated at approximately 1.2 trillion becquerels.

This release is part of an ongoing effort to reduce the number of storage tanks on-site to create space for decommissioning activities, including the construction of facilities for fuel debris retrieval. Since the start of marine discharges in August 2023, approximately 173,000 tons of treated water have been released.

Regarding waste management, repairs have been completed on an expanded solid waste incineration facility that had been offline since February 2024 due to fire alarm activations caused by steam and gas from chip fermentation. The facility is expected to resume operations in August. Monitoring of radioactive waste storage and other disposal progress continues as part of the long-term decommissioning plan, which is targeted for completion by 2051.
