Fukushima Daiichi treated water release reaches three-year mark
Three years after beginning the release of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has discharged approximately 172,700 tonnes of water into the ocean across 22 rounds. Despite the ongoing process, the total volume of stored water has only decreased by roughly 7% to 7.6%, as new contaminated water continues to be generated by contact between groundwater or rain and the melted fuel debris within the reactors.
The release process involves diluting the water with seawater to ensure tritium concentrations are below one-fortieth of Japan's safety standards. TEPCO aims to complete the discharge and the plant's decommissioning by 2051. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is monitoring the operation and has reported no unusual levels of radioactivity in the surrounding marine environment.
While local officials in Fukushima note that direct reputational damage to the regional fishing industry has been relatively limited, international tensions remain. Several countries and regions, including China, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Russia, continue to maintain import restrictions on Japanese seafood and food products due to safety concerns.
