Fukushima Gin launched to upcycle non-standard peaches
Star Mark Co., Ltd. has announced the release of ‘Fukushima Gin’ as the 24th installment of its ‘Ken Gin Project by agataJapan.’ The craft gin is produced using ‘Akatsuki’ peaches from Fukushima Prefecture, a region that ranks second in Japan for peach production.
The project focuses on upcycling, utilizing ripe peaches that are considered non-standard due to shape, size, or weather damage, which makes them difficult to distribute through traditional retail channels. By using these peaches, the initiative aims to reduce food loss. The peaches are processed and flash-frozen by Fukushima-based Momo ga aru Co., Ltd. before being used in the gin production by Tateyama Brewing Co., Ltd.
Ahead of general sales, a crowdfunding campaign is being conducted on CAMPFIRE. The gin is priced at 6,600 yen for a 500ml bottle with an alcohol content of 40%. The long-term goal of the Ken Gin Project is to eventually blend gins from all 47 prefectures to create a ‘Japan Gin.’
