Fukushima issues bear advisory amid rising human injuries

Authorities in Japan's Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures are managing increased bear activity. Fukushima Prefecture has issued an autumn bear sighting advisory for the entire prefecture, effective until November 30, 2026. This follows a rise in sightings and human injuries, with seven reported injuries involving ten people as of late August. Notable incidents include an attack on a trail maintenance worker in Kaneyama Town and a woman in the Goshikinuma Nature Trail in Urabandai.

In Miyagi Prefecture, officials announced the lifting of a bear sighting advisory for the prefecture and a specific bear warning for Sendai's Aoba Ward as of August 31, 2026. The decision follows a decrease in sightings compared to July, with August numbers trending toward seasonal averages. Despite the lifting of these specific alerts, local authorities continue to urge residents and hikers to remain cautious, avoid solo travel, and use bear bells to prevent encounters.
