Fukushima Prefecture announces school enrollment and staffing updates
The Fukushima Prefectural Board of Education has announced significant changes to school enrollment capacities and staffing for the 2027 academic year. Due to a projected decrease in the number of junior high school graduates, the enrollment capacity for full-time high schools will be reduced by 300 students to a total of 11,060. Enrollment for prefectural junior high schools remains unchanged at 180 students, while special needs high schools will see a slight increase to approximately 400 students.
School restructuring includes the closure of Fukushima Nishi and Fukushima Kita high schools, which will be replaced by the establishment of Fukushima Gakugei High School. Additionally, Aizu High School will transition its general course to an interdisciplinary general course, though its capacity remains at 200.
In terms of staffing, the prefecture is recruiting fixed-term employees to cover roles such as full-time instructors, nursing teachers, and dormitory instructors. These positions are intended to replace staff taking childcare or spouse-related leave, with contracts lasting up to three years. Applications for high school positions have a preliminary deadline of January 4, 2027.
