Fukushima warns of dangerous high waves and hidden heatstroke risk as Typhoon 13 approaches

A weather forecast for Fukushima on 4 August predicts clear skies but a cold, moist wind called “Yamase” and unusually high waves of 3‑4 metres generated by Typhoon 13, making coastal swimming unsafe. Authorities advise residents to stay away from the shoreline until at least 6 August.

At the same time, local fire officials highlight a “hidden heatstroke” danger. Even though daytime temperatures in Fukushima City are only around 23 °C, 75 emergency transports for suspected heat‑related illness have been recorded this year. The risk is higher for elderly people who may not feel thirst or heat, and for anyone in humid conditions, indoor settings, or during night‑time rest. Officials stress the need for hydration, air‑conditioning use, and vigilance despite the modest temperature readings.
