Part of situation: Beatification and legacy of Blessed Fulton J. Sheen (5 clusters)

Fulton Sheen beatified in St. Louis, marking major milestone for American Catholic

Fulton Sheen beatification Catholicism sainthood evangelization

Archbishop Fulton Sheen, a prominent 20th-century Catholic media figure, was beatified on September 24, 2026, in St. Louis, Missouri. The ceremony, held at The Dome at America’s Center, was attended by approximately 50,000 worshippers. This milestone makes Sheen the first American bishop to be declared ‘Blessed,’ placing him one step closer to sainthood.

The beatification follows the Vatican’s recognition of a miracle attributed to Sheen’s intercession: the life-saving resuscitation of James Fulton Egstrom, who survived 61 minutes without a heartbeat as a newborn. During the ceremony, the teenager carried a vessel containing Sheen’s relics.

Sheen is widely remembered for his pioneering use of mass media, specifically his television program ‘Life Is Worth Living,’ which reached an estimated 30 million viewers weekly during the 1950s. His legacy continues to influence modern evangelization through radio, television, and digital platforms. In recognition of his impact, the first parish in the world named after him will be established in El Paso, Illinois, through a merger involving his baptismal church, St. Mary’s.

Observers noted the event’s significance for both long-time followers and a younger generation of Catholics who have discovered his teachings through his writings and media legacy.
