Funchal building tower to be demolished after major fire
A portion of a building tower in the Zona Velha district of Funchal will undergo controlled demolition following a major fire on Friday night. An inspection conducted this morning determined that the structure's integrity was compromised by the intensity of the flames, which heavily carbonized the upper sections and destroyed windows.
The fire broke out in a three-story residential building on Rua da Boa Viagem around 11:33 PM. Firefighters worked to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjacent buildings in the densely populated area. The fire was contained to the initial building and brought under control by 2:45 AM.
Emergency response efforts involved 42 personnel and 16 vehicles from the Funchal Sapadores, Madeira Volunteer, and Santa Cruz Sapadores fire departments. Eight people have been relocated due to the incident, including residents of a neighboring building affected by smoke. Two individuals, a resident and a firefighter, sustained minor injuries and were taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça as a precaution.
