Funchal council backs €20 million local housing plan

The Câmara Municipal of Funchal unanimously approved a Local Housing Strategy that authorises up to €20 million for municipal construction and rehabilitation projects through 2026. The meeting also saw the unanimous adoption of a revised PRESERVA regulation setting a ceiling of €8,000 for housing maintenance and a revised rental subsidy cap raised to €1,100, allowing monthly assistance of up to €275 for currently about 1,000 families. Additional measures include a €6 million co‑financing of EU environmental funds and a solidarity motion supporting Venezuelan citizens.

Nationally, Portugal’s Instituto Nacional de Estatística will release first‑quarter housing rent data, noting a 17.8% rise in prices, while the latest banking‑housing evaluation index hit a record after a 16.5% increase in April. The day’s agenda also features a visit by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, talks among Energy Ministers on the EU TEN‑E network package, and discussions on extending parental leave.
