Funchal honors individuals preserving local cultural traditions

The Funchal City Council has awarded Municipal Tourist Distinctions to four individuals for their roles in preserving the city's cultural identity and traditions. The ceremony, held at the Mercado dos Lavradores terrace as part of World Tourism Day celebrations, recognized local workers who maintain traditional crafts and services.

Among the honorees were Margarida Ascensão and Maria José Rodrigues, recognized for their work in Madeira Embroidery and the transmission of this traditional knowledge. Pedro Gonçalves was honored for his 64 years of service at the Fish Square, and Paulo Pestana was recognized for his long-standing dedication to the hat-making profession.

Funchal Mayor Jorge Carvalho stated that the awards aim to honor those at the foundation of the city's daily life and in locations that serve as tourist landmarks. He noted that while tourism is a primary economic driver for the region, these individuals contribute to the essential daily services and cultural heritage that define the city for both residents and visitors.
