Funchal housing rights protest scheduled for November 14

A demonstration advocating for the right to housing is scheduled to take place on November 14 at 11:00 AM on Rua Fernão de Ornelas in Funchal. Organized by the ‘Porta a Porta’ movement, the protest aims to address the growing housing crisis affecting workers, youth, families, and the elderly.

The Association of Retirees, Pensioners, and the Elderly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARPIRAM) has announced its support for the mobilization. The association is calling for increased public intervention, arguing that housing should be treated as a fundamental human right rather than a luxury good or a commodity subject solely to market rules.

Protesters seek to highlight how rising rents and property prices in Madeira are making it increasingly difficult for residents to maintain community ties, start families, or live with dignity due to the disproportionate amount of income required for housing costs.
