Funchal Mayor confirms paid parking for Praia Formosa

Jorge Carvalho, the Mayor of Funchal, has confirmed that 420 parking spaces in the Praia Formosa redevelopment project will be paid. The decision, approved during a municipal meeting, aims to ensure vehicle turnover and prevent long-term occupation of the spaces.

The new configuration reduces the planned number of spaces from 600 to 420, consisting of 360 underground and 60 surface spots. Carvalho noted that this still represents an increase of 160 spaces compared to the 260 currently available. The Mayor defended the plan against opposition criticism, stating that eight public access points to the beach, commercial support spaces, and a 38,000-square-meter free-access garden will be maintained.

Construction timing remains dependent on private promoters and a pending judicial ruling. Additionally, the municipality approved a regulation revision for the Habitar Funchal program, which will allow the city to lease housing from the market to sub-lease to families in need, supported by a two-million-euro investment.
