Portugal 2027 State Budget approved in general assembly

The Portuguese Parliament has approved the 2027 State Budget in its general form. The proposal, presented by the PSD/CDS-PP coalition led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, secured passage through the votes of the PSD and CDS-PP, supported by the abstentions of the PS, PAN, and JPP parties. Opposition parties, including Chega, IL, Livre, PCP, and BE, voted against the document.

The budget now moves to a phase of specialty discussion, where amendments can be proposed. A final global vote is scheduled for November 24. During parliamentary hearings, Economy Minister Manuel Castro Almeida addressed concerns regarding local government funding, noting that a proposal exists to ensure approximately 210 parishes do not face budget cuts in 2027 compared to 2026.

In economic news, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported that the Portuguese economy grew by 2.4% in the third quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, representing a deceleration from the 2.6% growth seen in the previous year. The government maintains a GDP growth projection of 2.3% for the full year.
