Funchal sanitation shortfall prompts CDU to demand upgraded wastewater treatment

The CDU political coalition in Funchal warned that basic sanitation services remain insufficient across the municipality, with many high‑land neighborhoods – including Pico do Cardo, Vasco Gil, Santa Quitéria and Poço Rodrigo – still lacking sewage networks. The party blamed the municipal government for not addressing the problem despite population growth.

CDU also highlighted open‑air sewage at coastal sites such as Praia do Vigário, Praia Formosa and Doca do Cavacas, describing the situation as a "crime ambiental" and a "vergonha". It called for the urgent enlargement of existing wastewater treatment plants (ETAR) and the construction of new sewer networks to ensure universal access to sanitation "from the mountains to the sea".
