Fundación Affinity reports sharp decline in Spanish pet adoptions

Pet adoptions in Spain have reached their lowest levels since the pandemic, according to the ‘Él Nunca Lo Haría’ study by Fundación Affinity. Out of 285,000 animals available in shelters, only 120,000 were adopted, representing a 42% adoption rate.

Dog adoptions fell by 18% compared to 2024, with approximately 72,000 dogs adopted out of 169,000 collected. Cat adoptions also saw a decline of 14%, with 48,000 adopted from a total of 116,000.

Isabel Buil, director of Fundación Affinity, noted that increased adoptions are essential to decongest shelters and provide more opportunities for animals. The decline in adoptions has led to longer stays in shelters; adult and senior animals now spend an average of over one year in care, while puppies typically stay for about three months.
