Fundación Mundo Marino releases six rescued penguins in Argentina

Six penguins have been released back into the sea off the coast of Buenos Aires, Argentina, following a two-month rehabilitation process led by the Fundación Mundo Marino. The group consists of four Magellanic penguins and two macaroni penguins.

The Magellanic penguins were rescued after becoming entangled in artisanal fishing nets between late June and mid-July, thanks to timely reports from local fishermen. The macaroni penguins were found covered in oil, suffering from malnutrition and dehydration.

Biologist Sergio Rodríguez Heredia explained that the oil contamination compromised the birds' plumage impermeability, preventing them from maintaining body heat. The rehabilitation involved specialized treatment in temperature-controlled enclosures to stabilize the birds and restore their natural oil secretions. This release marks the second group of penguins returned to the ocean by the foundation in 2026, following the release of 15 animals in April.
