Fundação Hospitalar do Acre achieves 121 liver transplants, setting new regional milestone

Fundação Hospitalar do Acre (Fundhacre) performed its 121st liver transplant on 30 June 2024, implanting a donor liver into 54‑year‑old Valério Bryk from Rondônia, who suffered from hepatocarcinoma and cirrhosis. The operation was made possible by the consent of the donor’s family and highlights the centre’s capacity to deliver high‑complexity care in Brazil’s North.

The day before, on 29 June, Fundhacre completed its 120th liver transplant on patient Raimundo Oliveira. Coordinating physician Doriana Moreira da Silva stressed the program’s rapid growth and called for broader public awareness of organ‑donation, noting the donor family’s pivotal role.

Governor Mailza Assis visited Bryk after surgery, underscoring the state’s commitment to the public health system (SUS) and to providing advanced medical services outside the Southeast. These successive milestones illustrate the expansion of SUS‑supported transplant services in Acre, benefiting patients from other states and even abroad.
