Funding Contract Signed, Construction Starts for Timisoara Regional Oncology Institute

The financing contract for the Timisoara Regional Oncology Institute (IROT) was signed, allowing the construction phase to begin. The announcement was made by Alfred Simonis, president of the Timis County Council, who said the contract enables the winning contractor to start work on the largest oncology hospital in western Romania.

The project, estimated at about €250 million, will feature more than 500 beds, an operating theatre, intensive care, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, a bone‑marrow transplant centre and research facilities. Built to near‑zero‑energy (nZEB) standards, it is expected to be completed by the end of 2030. Funding comes from the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility (PNRR) and the Romanian government, aiming to relieve pressure on existing cancer centres and provide comprehensive oncology care for the western region of the country.
