Funding Secured to Complete Greece’s West Attica Suburban Railway
The Greek government announced that financing for the West Attica suburban railway project has been secured through the National Development Program 2026‑2030 and the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund. The project, which is 53 % physically completed and represents €56.13 million (ex‑VAT), faced delays due to unexpected technical and licensing difficulties, relocation of utility networks, as well as administrative and judicial pending matters.
The new financing arrangement provides additional time to resolve these issues, ensures the project can be finished within the revised schedule, and allows for a possible extension of the line to the centre of Megara. Authorities clarified that the funding change does not reduce the total amount of EU resources allocated to Greece, and that the released funds are being redirected to other mature infrastructure projects, enhancing overall absorption of EU capital. Additional investments under the same fund support rail system upgrades such as telematics in major tunnels, preventive maintenance, and monitoring of over a hundred bridges.
