Rethymno firefighters' funerals draw national mourning

Pantelis Diamantakis, 25, and Manolis Stratidakis, 58, died while battling a wildfire that erupted on 30 July 2026 in the Kriá Vrysi area of Rethymno, Crete. The fire produced zero visibility, extreme heat and winds over 100 km/h, trapping the men near their fire engine.

Pantelis’s funeral was held at the Holy Church of Saint Nektarios in Amari and was attended by hundreds, including PASOK president Nikos Androulakis. Manolis’s funeral took place the same afternoon at the Holy Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Perivolia (Gerakari, Rethymno). Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis and other political figures expressed condolences, stressing that the firefighters died protecting lives, property and the environment. The municipality of Rethymno observed a three‑day period of mourning with flags at half‑mast.

A volunteer rescue team (EDEAK) rescued an injured firefighter during the same blaze, bringing the total number of injured firefighters to three.
