Fungi play vital role in forest ecosystem health

Fungi play a critical role in forest ecosystems by decomposing organic matter, aiding tree nutrient and water uptake, and providing food for various wildlife. The Slovenia Forest Service highlights the importance of these organisms, noting that much of the fungal network, consisting of mycelium, remains hidden underground.

Through mycorrhizal connections, fungi link tree roots, creating what is often called the ‘forest internet.’ In this symbiotic relationship, trees provide fungi with sugars produced via photosynthesis, while fungi enhance the trees' access to water and minerals. The presence or absence of specific fungal species can serve as an indicator of the overall health of the forest ecosystem.

Human activities, such as intensive logging and the creation of forest monocultures, can disrupt these vital underground networks and reduce fungal biodiversity.
