Fungus and Iron anime announced with direction by Keitaro Motonaga

The anime industry is preparing for the launch of Fungus and Iron, a new dystopian survival series directed by Keitaro Motonaga, known for The Beginning After the End. The story is set in a world controlled by an authoritarian regime called Amigasa, which uses a parasitic fungus to suppress human free will, drawing comparisons to the Cordyceps in The Last of Us.

The plot follows Dante, a young soldier immune to the fungus, who joins a rebel faction after meeting a girl named Aoi. The production features an dark, urban, and decadent aesthetic developed by Yokohama Animation Lab and is aimed at a mature (Seinen) audience, focusing on psychological tension and survival.

Hajime Isayama, the creator of Attack on Titan, has publicly praised the original manga published in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine (Kondasha), highlighting its exploration of free will.
