Funso Doherty unveils radical Lagos housing plan
Funso Doherty, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate for Lagos State, has unveiled a “radical approach” to addressing the region’s housing deficit. Speaking to stakeholders in the Alimosho Local Government Area, Doherty pledged to move beyond the traditional delivery of a few hundred housing units to target the construction of tens of thousands of homes.
Doherty emphasized that the government cannot fund all necessary construction alone and must instead focus on creating the institutional framework required to attract private-sector investment. Key components of his plan include prioritizing land allocation for affordable residential development and providing government-backed guarantees.
Additionally, Doherty proposed strengthening housing finance by supporting or operating secondary mortgage finance institutions. He argued that by providing a stable regulatory and financial backbone, the state can offer the necessary comfort for private capital to fund large-scale housing projects.
