Furnas volcano alert raised to V1 following seismic activity

The Azores Seismovulcanological Information and Surveillance Center (CIVISA) has raised the volcanic alert level for the Furnas volcano to V1, indicating a metastable equilibrium phase due to increased seismic activity.

Multiple earthquakes were recorded on the island of São Miguel. The most energetic event occurred at 16:41 local time with a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale, with an epicenter approximately four kilometers west-southwest of Furnas. This tremor was felt with a maximum intensity of V on the Modified Mercalli scale in the parish of Furnas, and lower intensities were reported in Povoação, Ribeira Quente, Ponta Garça, and other nearby areas.

This followed an earlier seismic event at 13:44 local time with a magnitude of 2.5. The V1 alert level is set to remain in effect for eight days unless new information arises.
